The Save State: Importing Video Game Tactics for Deadlier Encounters

I’ve been grinding through Baldur’s Gate 3 on Tactical mode lately, and the combat is exactly what it should be: punishing, strategic, and lethal. You survive because the game allows you to save at strategic moments. When you make a fatal error, and you will die, a lot, you can reload, analyze the battlefield, and try a new approach.

It got me thinking about the tabletop. What if we brought a hardcore "Save Rule" into a standard campaign?

The concept is straightforward: as you play, the party can ask the Game Master to establish a Save Point. If the upcoming breach goes sideways and the party wipes, you reset the board to that exact moment.

The Mechanics of the Tabletop Save

To keep this from turning into a chaotic free-for-all, there must be strict parameters:

  • The Unanimous Vote: The decision to save must be a unanimous party vote. If even one player dissents, there is no save. This forces communication and alignment before anyone kicks down the door.
  • Limited Ammunition: Cap the saves. Maybe you only get three per campaign arc, or strictly one per session. They need to be a precious tactical resource.
  • The Execution: When the save is called, every player immediately takes a photo of their character sheet with their phone and sends it to the GM. The GM notes the exact location on the map, tracks the active conditions, and logs the timeline.

Taking the Training Wheels Off

Why do this? Because it allows you, as the GM, to ruthlessly crank up the danger.

When death is permanent, Game Masters often subconsciously pull their punches to avoid ending a campaign on a bad roll. But if the players have a strategic safety net of their own making, you can design encounters that are devastatingly complex and brutally difficult. It shifts the game from a narrative stroll into a pure, hardcore tactical puzzle.

Embracing the Meta-Game

This rule also does something fascinating: it weaponizes the meta-game.

Deciding when to save is explicitly a player decision, not a character decision. By bringing this dynamic out into the open, you add an entirely new layer of out-of-character strategy. Players must negotiate risk versus reward together, analyzing your GM style and trying to predict when the hammer is going to drop.

You can adapt this to any TTRPG system. Set the save point, dial the enemy lethality up to maximum, and let the dice fall where they may.
