Think of Kit Carson in 1868. The hero of the western frontier walked thousands upon thousands of miles across a wild, untamed nation. He could never have fathomed that just a century after his death—within the lifetime of his grandchildren—men would be walking on the very moon he slept under.
By exploring the histories of theology, psychology, philosophy, archaeology, the sciences, the arts, and the rugged grit of the mountain men and gunslingers of the American West, we see ourselves. We see what has always made us human. All sides of us.
This understanding of who we are, forged through the ages, is what will help us shape the future of this world with our very thoughts. Because that is exactly where we are heading.
Today, I type or speak my thoughts into an algorithm, and it processes at lightning speed to shape the writing I'm doing. But soon, we won't need to type. We won't need to speak. The algorithms will monitor everything else: our vitals, our moods, the tone of our voice, the gait in our walk. They will track what we eat, how we sleep, the media we consume, the art we make, and the company we keep.
Just by going through life, the algorithm will guess, and it will build your world around you in real-time. Who you meet, where you live, what you do—it will all be presented to you. You will live the exact life you think and feel.
What a magnificent journey. And what a potential hell.
You have a choice. You can let the machine guess your future, handing over the reins to an algorithm that feeds you a comfortable, fabricated reality. Or, you can take control.
